Telefónica on track to comply with Brazil data legislation
Spanish telco Telefónica is on track with its roadmap to be in full compliance with Brazilian personal data protection legislation (LGPD), which was approved in late 2018 and is expected to go into effect in 2020, according to executives at its Brazilian subsidiary Vivo.
A few weeks after LGDP was signed into law by former President Temer, Telefônica Brasil set up an internal multidisciplinary committee to start the process towards compliance, which meets regularly to monitor and evaluate advances in that regard. Workshops have also been conducted with the managers of dozens of departments.
In a similar vein to Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Brazilian law gives companies an 18-month deadline - which would be in February next year - before fines and legal responsibilities would apply. However, new amendments were made to the text and the deadline could still change.
However, Vivo is working to the February 2020 deadline to complete the project regardless of any changes in the official schedule, its executives said at an event on Thursday.
Most of Telefónica's services and products have been launched in line with data privacy policies already in place.
On Thursday, Telefónica announced the launch of its global cyber unit ElevenPath in Brazil.
According to Debora Ignacio Bortolasi, products & innovation director for B2B at Telefônica Brasil, the company has been working in Brazil for over 10 years, managing the mission-critical infrastructure of major clients.
"ElevenPath comes to improve this mission-critical service in Brazil while also helping companies in compliance with LGPD and international certifications," she said at the event.
