Trinidad and Tobago storms could cause annual damage of US$40mn
Climate change is expected to cause an increase in the severity and frequency of tropical storms in Trinidad and Tobago with annual damage estimated at up to US$36.9mn, according to the IDB.
Climate change will have an impact on agriculture, infrastructure, coastal areas, human settlements and water sources, according to the IDB report Understanding the Economics of Climate Adaption in Trinidad and Tobago.
Climate change is expected to cause a reduction in water resources due to increased evaporation of surface water and a decrease in precipitation that will reduce groundwater and aquifer recharge. Climate change is also likely to cause an increase in sea level that will result in flooding of coastal settlements and nearby infrastructure.
Potential protection measures include construction of dikes in coastal areas, institutional training programs, installation of meteorological alert systems and rainwater harvesting systems.
The most cost-effective measures, however, include the installation of meteorological alert systems and restoration of mangroves.
