Uruguay's Antel to pay US$45mn for spectrum
Uruguay's state telco Antel will pay US$45.4mn for a block of spectrum reserved for the company during a recently concluded auction, according to information from telecoms regulator Ursec.
A total of 55MHz was earmarked for Antel, broken up into: four blocks of 10MHz in 700MHz, for which it will pay US$10.2mn for each block; 10MHz in the 1900MHz/2100MHz band, for which it will pay US$3mn; and 5MHz in the 2100MHz band, for which it will pay US$1.5mn.
During an auction last week, Movistar (Telefónica) paid US$31mn for 30MHz in the 700MHz band, while Claro (América Móvil) paid US$35.2mn for 20MHz in the 700MHz band and 20MHz in the 1700-2100MHz (AWS) band.
The 700MHz band went for an average price of US$10mn per block of 10MHz, while the AWS band totted up US$7.5mn for each 10MHz block. Three blocks of 10MHz spectrum in the AWS band received no offers.
The concession licenses will be awarded for 20 years and the operators have 24 months to set up their networks.
The tender enables the two private operators to boost their competitiveness against Antel.
In December, Uruguay had 5.4mn mobile lines, of which 54% pertained to Antel, followed by Movistar (32% market share) and Claro (14%).
