Waste dumped in Medellin's landfill in La Pradera environmental park is not separated and goes untreated, potentially causing environmental damage and contamination along the nearby Porce river, Colombia's Antioquia department inspector's office announced.
Workers started dumping trash in the open-air landfill one-month ago, before teams had installed separation plants designed to help treat waste, newspaper Portafolio reported. City waste officials refused to comment when contacted by BNamericas.
The park is designed to separate and treat 2,000t/d of solid waste from Medellin. Other features include compost piles designed to break down organic waste, and access infrastructure. Medellin has some 2 million residents.
