Several Puerto Rican citizen groups are demanding the environmental quality board (JCA) close down the Celsius biomedical incinerator in Caguas, which may be affecting residents' health, El Nuevo Dia reported.
The groups include the Caguas communities' environment defense group (CCUNDA), the waste sustainable management alliance (Amaneser) and the Mision Industrial group.
Public health school studies revealed that there is are higher incidents of respiratory ailments in the area. Official results are due next week, the paper added.
The plant incinerates both pathological and pharmaceutical waste, of which the latter contains large amounts of plastic, causing toxic fumes to be released.
The incinerator was designed to handle some 840,000t/y of waste, according to an article printed last year by newspaper Listin Digital.
