Braskem to use naphtha made from recycled plastic

Brazilian petrochemicals producer Braskem (NYSE: BAK) plans to use from 2013 naphtha that has been produced from recycled post-consumption plastics as a feedstock, the company said in a statement.

The naphtha will be supplied by Novaenergia, part of the Wastech waste treatment group, which will invest 25mn reais (US$16.0mn) in the construction of a recycling plant in Salvador, in the northeastern state of Bahia, with capacity to process 450t/d of waste.

Braskem said it expects initially to acquire 1.4Ml of naphtha from plastic waste per year. It will use this as feedstock in its basic petrochemicals unit at Camaçari.
