A group of municipalities from Ecuador's upper Catamayo basin and Peru's Ayabaca province government are planning to launch a project to mitigate contamination in the binational Catamayo-Chira basin.
The project will be financed by Spanish cooperation agency AECID and the Andean Community (CAN), as well as the aforementioned entities, according to a CAN release.
The initiative involves cleaning up solid waste in the basin and ensuring adequate solid waste management on the cross-border zone.
The cleanup will include implementing proper collection and transportation of solid waste and construction of an adequate final disposal site, as well as staff training and public awareness programs, the release said.
