Chile's Aquatacama water pipeline project still in the works
Chile's US$15bn Aquatacama water highway is still moving forward, but it is progressing slowly, Félix Bogliolo, founding partner and director of French consultancy firm Vía Marina, told BNamericas.
The 1,600km freshwater pipeline is designed to transport water from abundant rivers in southern Chile to the north of the country, where water resources are insufficient to cover the needs of the mining industry and human population.
The pipeline project is thought to be a cheaper alternative to seawater desalination, which has been developed in the country in some cases.
Chilean state development agency Corfo is currently drawing up an international tender process for the benchmarking of technology solutions to increase water availability in the Atacama (III), Coquimbo (IV) and Valparaíso (V) regions.
In October 2012, the project submitted feasibility studies along with economic and social impact studies undertaken by the corporation Fundación Chile.
A few months later, a study by Universidad de Chile was submitted on agricultural water demand in the Norte Grande and Norte Chico regions of the country, as requested by the Chile's national irrigation commission CNR.
Former president Sebastián Piñera's government received these studies, but did not have enough time within his mandate to take a decision.
Once the benchmarking studies are completed, which is estimated to be at the beginning of 2017, President Michelle Bachelet's government is expected to take a more definitive decision on the Aquatacama project, Bogliolo said.
Bogliolo also underlined that there are a number of private investors interested in the project that are studying the possibility of developing the project as a private initiative. Private sector interest is particularly focused on the stretch of the project in the Valparaíso region, added Bogliolo, which could serve as a pilot project before undertaking the project in full.
