Beverage giant Coca-Cola is set to double its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling capacity in Mexico following the purchase of recycling firm PetStar.
Arca Continental, Coca-Cola's second largest drinks bottler, has completed its purchase of PetStar and its PET recycling plant in Toluca, Mexico state, Coca-Cola said in a release, without detailing the cost of the transaction.
PetStar recycles 30,000t/y of PET, equivalent to 1bn bottles, which can be reused to make new bottles.
The acquisition will boost Coca-Cola's PET recycling capacity to 55,000t/y, the release said.
Coca-Cola's bottles in Mexico include up to 50% recycled PET.
