Legislators in Mexico state (Edomex) are calling for the imposition of a 20-centavo (US$0.02) green tax on the production of plastic bottles, paper El Universal reported.

The tax would be levied against companies using plastic bottles for food, cleaning and beauty products. The proposal would introduce a 20-centavo tax on plastic containers up to 4l and a 1-peso tax on containers from 4l to 20l.

Edomex generates 900mn plastic bottles each year, 10% of the country's total, and many are discarded in rivers, dams, forests and drainage systems, legislator Enrique Jacob Rocha of opposition party PRI was reported as saying.
