Argentine President Cristina Fernández has officially opened the reconstructed Figueroa dam in central northern province Santiago del Estero.
The central government invested 422mn pesos (US$103mn) to repair and expand the structure, which has been renamed the Presidente Néstor Carlos Kirchner dam, according to a presidential release.
Work was carried out by local construction firm Panedile and involved expanding the dam's capacity to 70Mm3, building a main irrigation channel and secondary channels.
The dam, which receives water from the Salado river, collapsed almost exactly 30 years ago.
The repaired dam will help prevent flooding in the area, allowing the recovery of 10,000ha of agricultural land and the incorporation of another 20,000ha.
