Argentina's newly re-elected President Cristina Fernández has called on the Buenos Aires province government to invest more in cleaning up the Riachuelo river.
The Riachuelo forms part of the Matanza-Riachuelo river basin, which is highly polluted by industrial waste and untreated wastewater, and the object of a lengthy cleanup program.
"We're asking for solidarity from those with higher per capita incomes so that the basin can be cleaned up," local daily Clarín quoted Fernández as saying.
River basin authority Acumar has said it expects to complete the design of a new cleanup plan by early 2012. According to preliminary estimates, it will cost upwards of 23.8bn pesos (US$562mn) up to 2024 to clean up the river basin.
