Floods spark water rationing in Colombian city
Villavicencio, capital of central Colombia's Meta department, has not had full water services since Saturday, when heavy rains destroyed a section of the aqueduct that feeds the city.
The technical manager of the city's water utility EAAV, Félix Muruaga, told reporters that the floods affected the La Esmeralda potable water plant and destroyed at least 120m worth of pipelines.
"It is a very complex situation, because it is an area that's difficult to access," Muruaga said, according to Radio Noticias. Since the affected aqueduct is located in a ravine, and water levels have kept increasing, EAAV has used helicopters to get an overview of the area.
"We couldn't determine the exact damage nor the amount of pipes that were attached to the mountain rocks," the official added, saying that workers were trying to open a path to the installations in order to start repairs, which could take 30-45 days.
On Wednesday, EAAV said in a press release that residents in Villavicencio were receiving water but that services are being rationed. Water was also being distributed via tanker trucks.
EAAV serves approximately 400,000 residents in Villavicencio and has invested 400bn pesos (US$140mn) over the last 10 years, according to its website.
The rains that have hit Colombia have also caused damage to several roads, including the old highway connecting Villavicencio with Bogotá.
