Goldcorp insists it played by the book following water contamination
Canadian mining company Goldcorp insists it has complied with all regulatory procedures following a leak of water contaminated with selenium at its Peñasquito gold mine in Mexico's Zacatecas state, which Reuters reported on Wednesday.
"As demonstrated in the article, Goldcorp has followed every single regulatory process and, as such, the issue never extended beyond the mine's property," Michael Harvey, Goldcorp's regional director for corporate affairs and security, told BNamericas.
When asked if the report was accurate in stating that the Vancouver-based company did not alert the Mexican government about the rise in selenium levels until October 2014, a year after the problem was detected in one groundwater monitoring well near the mine, Harvey repeated that Goldcorp always followed all the relevant regulations.
The Reuters article claims that two weeks ago, after the agency had contacted Goldcorp, the company met with representatives from Mexico's environmental regulator (Profepa) in Zacatecas. At the meeting, Goldcorp reportedly described the ways in which the company is handling the leak, one of which is relocating a pond that reclaims water from the tailings.
According to the newswire, Goldcorp also said that in addition to the original well, there were leaks located to the west and south of the mine.
As of Wednesday night, neither Mexico's water authority Conagua nor Profepa had publicly commented on the matter.
Peñasquito is Mexico's largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits, Peñasco and Chile Colorado, which contain gold, silver, lead and zinc. In 2015 it produced 860,300oz of gold, according to the company's website.
