Lack of funding threatens Mexico City's water supply
Some 270bn pesos (US$14.3bn) will need to be invested over the next 50 years to guarantee the potable water supply needs of Mexico City, according to Ramón Aguirre, director of local water utility Sacmex.
Speaking at an event in the Mexican capital on Wednesday, Aguirre said that water supply in the city is currently only guaranteed through 2019, state news agency Notimex reported.
The official called on the members of Mexico's lower house to increase the utility's budget in the short term in order to avoid a water crisis.
Aguirre also proposed higher rates for those who use the most water and in the areas where water is wasted the most.
He has repeatedly said that the city's water pipelines are in urgent need of an upgrade, as most of them are decades old. According to reports, around 47% of the water that enters the city's network is lost because of a lack of maintenance.
Mayor-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who takes office on December 5, has also addressed the city's funding problems, pledging to increase the annual budget of Sacmex by 5bn pesos from the 13.6bn pesos it received this year.
