The government of Brazil's Amazonas state capital Manaus is due to call a tender on September 20 to build a disposal site specifically designed to handle hospital waste, a spokesperson from the city's public sanitation department (Semulsp) told BNamericas.
"We do not have an estimated budget as yet, as the economic research institute from the University of São Paulo is still conducting research into the initiative," the spokesperson said.
The project involves storing, treating and disposing of medical waste, according to a municipal government release.
The winning contractor will need to obtain the appropriate environmental licensing for the facility.
The initiative aims to properly dispose of medical waste according to the national solid waste policy and help prevent the contamination of water the area.
