Colombia's environment, housing and territorial development ministry (MAVDT) is drawing up a decree to prohibit mining and other harmful activities in the country's coral reef and mangrove swamp ecosystems.
The regulation also prohibits exploitation of hydrocarbons, aquafarming and industrial fishing.
Some 5.87km2 will be protected under the ruling, which falls under the government's national development plan, MAVDT said in a release.
The rule also includes specific measures to protect five wetlands included in the Ramsar convention: the Otún Delta on the Baudó river, Laguna de la Cocha lake in Nariño department, the Delta estuary on the Magdalena river, the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta marsh on the Magdalena river, and the Lacustre wetlands of the Chingaza national park.
