Peru's environment minister (Minam), Ricardo Giesecke, has signed an agreement with Junín department's El Tambo mayor Ángel Unchupaico to provide technical assistance to improve waste management in the area.

The project aims to clean up open-air garbage dumps in El Tambo, which generates 110t/d of domestic and commercial waste, state news agency Andina reported.

Minam will form technical groups that will work to clean up the Agua de las Vírgenes and La Mejorada open-air dumps.

In related news, Giesecke also signed an agreement with the mayor of Huancavelia region's capital of the same name, Leoncio Huayllani, committing to build a solid waste treatment plant in eight months' time.

Minam will provide technical teams specialized in waste management, develop a public sanitation plan for the town, and seek financing for the project studies.

Huancavelica currently generates 27t/d of waste, which is deposited in the Pampachacra dump. Over half is recyclable, according to Huayllani.
