Venezuela's environment ministry (Minamb) is working with the country's main municipalities to close open-air dumps in 2011, an official from environment minister Alejandro Hitcher's office told BNamericas.
Municipalities will be responsible for building new sanitary landfills to replace existing dumps. Local authorities will likely collaborate with the design and financing of the projects, as well as construction tenders.
The ministry will invest several millions of dollars to stamp out and clean up the dumps at the request of President Hugo Chavez, the official said.
Minamb has a 1.9bn-bolivar (US$442mn) budget for 2011.
