NADB to develop water, waste projects in US-Mexico border communities
The North American Development Bank (NADB) and the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) are set to develop seven new infrastructure projects in the water and solid waste sectors.
These projects involve total investments of US$15mn and will benefit more than 514,000 residents in 14 communities on both sides of the US-Mexico border, NADB said in a release.
Of the projects approved, six will receive grants totaling US$2.6mn through NADB's community assistance program. These involve a project to make water system improvements in Tombstone, Arizona in order to reduce arsenic concentrations.
The other five are solid waste projects, which will be carried out in two communities in Coahuila state and three in Chihuahua state. Through these five projects, up to 557t of solid waste per day will be disposed of in properly operated landfills, benefiting over 510,000 residents.
The NADB will receive a US$1.89mn grant through the Border Environment Infrastructure Fund (BEIF) for the implementation of a wastewater collection and treatment project in Hidalgo County, Texas, which will provide first-time access to sewer services for 400 homes in six neighborhoods.
MORE PROJECTS
In additionally, a US$9.6mn loan was approved for the desalination plant in Ensenada, Baja California, which is currently under construction, it said.
Also were signed two contracts to develop further waterworks in the north of the country.
The first contract for US$7mn was contracted with the water utility in Reynosa, Tamaulipas to improve the city's wastewater collection system and extend treatment coverage to 100% of the city.
The second agreement, for US$2.8mn, was executed with the City of Anthony, New Mexico to replace a lift station, which will eliminate the risk of sewage spills.
