The president of Venezuela's congressional committee on the environment, opposition UNT party member Julio Montoya, has called on the environment ministry (Minamb) to investigate the Punta Gorda wastewater treatment plant in Vargas state.
The ministry had announced the plant in Mare Abajo city would be opened in November 2006; however the facility is not currently functioning, paper El Universal reported.
"[Waste]water doesn't even reach here and the sewers are collapsed. As a result, all the beaches in Vargas state are contaminated," Montoya was quoted as saying.
Montoya did not run into any workers during his inspection of the plant, the paper said.
