Panama launches works on 4 potable water plants
Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela signed decrees Tuesday to start construction of four potable water treatment plants.
The facilities will be in the provinces of Panamá, Colón and Panamá Oeste, and the works will require a combined US$595mn, benefiting over 750,000 residents.
The projects, to be developed under the management of national water utility IDAAN, will serve to meet the government's stated goal of reaching 100% potable water coverage in the country.
Howard potable water plant
One of the decrees signed by Varela calls for the construction of a potable water treatment facility in the Howard sector of Arraiján district in Panama Oesté province.
The so-called Ingeniero José G. Rodríguez potable water treatment plant will be built at a cost of US$212mn, benefitting around 283,000 residents of Veracruz, Arraiján, Burunga, Nuevo Emperador, Juan D. Arosemena, Santa Clara, Cerro Silvestre, Vista Alegre, Vacamonte and the Panamá Pacífico special economic zone, also known as the Howard free zone.
A consortium comprising the water and infrastructure divisions of Spanish company Acciona was awarded the contract to build the plant earlier this year.
The plant will supply 150,000m3 of water a day, and its design considers a future expansion option to increase treatment capacity to 227,000m3 of water a day.
Based on the tender documents, the plant must be designed and built within 750 days. The company will then have three years to operate and maintain it.
Gamboa plant
A second facility will be built in the Gamboa sector of Panamá province, requiring US$239mn in investments.
The so-called José "Pepe" Fierro potable water treatment plant will serve 140,000 residents of Ancón, San Felipe, San Francisco, El Chorrillo, Santa Ana, Calidonia, Curundú, Betania and Bella Vista.
The project is expected to bolster two existing water supply systems serving the Panamanian capital (the Sur and Norte hydraulic rings), as well as the Occidente II pipeline, which will help increase potable water quality and coverage in the metropolitan area of the capital.
The contract for the project was awarded earlier this year to the Agua para Gamboa consortium, which is comprised by the companies Construcciones Civiles Generales and Técnicas de Desalinización de Aguas (Tedagua).
Construction works on the plant are scheduled to last 450 days, after which the group will have a three-year term to operate it.
Sabanitas plant
A third project involves construction of second treatment module at the Sabanitas plant, located in the city of Colón, in the province of the same name.
This facility will supply 114,000m3 of water a day to 150,000 residents of the city and nearby Sabanitas, Puerto Limón and Cativá, among other areas. The plant will be designed with maximum capacity to supply over 261,000m3/day of potable water.
Construction of the project, which requires investments of US$109mn, was also awarded to a consortium formed by Acciona's water and infrastructure units.
The plant must be designed and built within 600 days, and then Acciona will have the right to operate and provide maintenance to the facility for an additional three years.
Federico Guardia plant expansion
The last project entails building a new treatment module at the existing Federico Guardia Conte potable water treatment plant, located in Chilibre, also in Panamá province.
The initiative will cost US$35mn to complete, helping increase production at the facility by 15mn gallons of water a day.
Some 150,000 residents of 24 de Diciembre, Mañanitas, Pacora, San Martín and Tocumen will be benefitted by the expansion of the plant, which is one of the country's largest.
The contract was awarded to Consorcio AB Chilibre, a two-company consortium comprised by Acciona Agua and BTD Proyectos.
Construction works on this facility are set to last 400 days. The group will then have the right to operate the plant for the following three years.
