Panama's water utility workers go on strike
Some 3,100 members of the workers' association of Panama's water utility IDAAN went on strike Monday to demand more supplies and equipment to be able to perform their work duties.
The association has been making these demands for a year without any result, local daily La Prensa reported workers' spokesperson Mercedes Cigarruista as saying.
The IDAAN employees are also protesting what they see as the potential privatization of the utility, reports local news portal TVN Noticias.
Allegations that the government is looking to privatize IDAAN have been circulating for the past few months. The government has denied these claims at several meetings with the workers.
The association agreed to temporary resume activities in the case of emergencies, such as major leaks or problems affecting the population's water supply.
In a statement, IDAAN's management called on the workers to end the strike and engage in talks.
The strike is taking place as the authorities are searching for a replacement for Julia Guardia, IDAAN's current director, who submitted her resignation last month.
