Peru accelerating water investment in Lima, provinces
Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who has pledged to provide potable water and sewerage services to 100% of the country's urban population by 2021, is ramping up investment in water infrastructure in the capital.
The government aims to guarantee 24-hour water services in Lima and other cities, said President Kuczynski during the inspection of an 88.4mn-sol (US$27mn) potable water project in Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district. Lurigancho is Lima's most heavily populated district, with 1mn inhabitants.
The project, which will benefit 77,000 shantytown residents, involves 35km of potable water pipelines and 29km of sewerage pipes, and 3,500 potable water connections and 4,200 sewerage connections, according to the housing and construction ministry.
"It's true that 97% have a tap in their home, but how many people have running water 24 hours a day?" Kuczynski said in a statement. "We have to work to ensure everyone has water, transport and job opportunities."
State water utility Sedapal, which has yet to provide services to 100% of the capital city's 10mn population, has lined up a 20bn-sol (US$6bn) portfolio of about 200 potable water and sewerage projects in Lima over the next five years.
In other water infrastructure news, the government has invested 30mn soles in 25 jet pumps that are designed to prevent a repeat of last year's floods, the housing ministry said in a statement. The equipment will be located in Piura and Lambayeque regions, two of those hardest hit by the floods, and can be mobilized to other parts of the country, according to the ministry.
"Each of these units has suction capacity equivalent to nine pumps, which makes it possible to unblock any drainage," housing minister Carlos Bruce said in the statement. "This equipment will prevent the great floods that occurred in the north."
Widespread floods, torrential rains and landslides caused by the El Niño phenomenon in the first quarter of 2017 left at least 163 dead and 291,000 homeless and caused billions in damage to roads, railways, power plants, schools and hospitals, mainly along the north coast, according to the central bank.
The government has embarked on a 26bn-sol (US$8bn) flooding reconstruction program, including unblocking 1,500km of sewerage networks in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, San Martín and Áncash regions, the ministry said.
