Ecuador's Quevado municipality in Los Ríos province plans to complete work on a new sanitary sewerage system by November next year.

The US$17.4mn project is being financed by state bank Banco del Estado. The bank is donating 47.4% of the total amount, local daily El Comercio reported.

Work began in May this year and is being carried out by local firm Eseico.

So far, the firm has installed sewerage collectors between the town of Nicolás and the La Oriental pumping station. Eseico is also building oxidation ponds and suction pumps.

Upon the project's completion, wastewater will be redirected to the oxidation pond for later processing by a wastewater treatment plant. Currently, the area's sewage is dumped into the Quevado river.

The project is expected to benefit 125,000 people.
