Argentina's Río Negro province government will spend 27mn pesos (US$6.6mn) on a project to supply water to the town of Sierra Grande by reusing part of the obsolete Comodoro-Buenos Aires gas pipeline.

Water will be channeled from an intake on the Pomona-SAO canal at a capacity of 40l/s, the local government reported in a release.

"This way we aim to supply water to the company Minera Sierra Grande and nearby neighborhoods dedicated to raising cattle, which are currently in short supply of the resource and have elevated salinity levels," said provincial production minister Juan Accatino.

The provincial water department (DPA) will manage the project, a schedule for which has yet to be determined.
