Roundup: Dump closure, Pirapó river cleanup, O-tek

The government of Chile's south-central region VIII has approved funding for a project to close the Frutillares dump in the city of Tomé, just outside the metropolitan area of regional capital Concepción. The project aims to clean up environmental contamination and will require an investment of some 672mn pesos (US$1.44mn), the regional government said in a release. The environment ministry ( MMA) approved a DIA for the project on March 24, according to documents published on its website. *** The EBY joint venture that administers the Yacyretá hydroelectric plant on the Argentine-Paraguayan border has kicked off a remediation project for the Pirapó river basin in Itapúa department. The initiative, which is part of the entity's sustainable environment program, aims to clean up the river's headwaters through reforestation and other environmental improvement works, EBY said in a release. The Pirapó pilot project, which EBY hopes to duplicate in river basins in three other departments, will also involve works in cities Pirapó, Bella Vista, Itapúa Poty, Alto Verá, and Edelira.
