Subdere to fund water systems for earthquake shelters

Monday, April 25, 2011

Chile's regional development department Subdere plans to allocate 1bn pesos (US$2.14mn) to improve potable water networks at shelters set up in earthquake-hit areas in region VIII, according to Bío Bío governor Víctor Lobos.

Former Bío Bío governor Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe, who resigned earlier this month, had opposed the installation of water systems in shelters, saying it would turn the temporary camps into a permanent situation for some families, Radio Bío Bío reported.

The project is expected to take off in the medium term, according to Talcahuano mayor Gastón Saavedra.
