Mexico's national water authority Conagua has distributed more than 1.40bn pesos (US$116mn) to water and sanitation providers to improve efficiency and infrastructure in these sectors, according to a Conagua release.
Of the total amount, 721mn pesos will go towards a sustainable water use initiative, while the remaining 772mn pesos will be used for Conagua's Prodder water rights return program.
"Conagua's priority is to support utilities via several federal programs, as those programs are the backbone of lending services in potable water, sewerage and sanitation, and through these services, people will have better access to quality resources," said Conagua director Jose Luis Luege.
The water authority carried out more than 37,000 actions worth over 28.4bn pesos under the Prodder program from 2002-10, Luege added.
