Brazil's Vale is one of the biggest metal and mining companies in the world. Its main activities include mineral production, sea and rail transport logistics, and hydroelectric generation.
The company ranks first in iron ore, pellets and nickel production in the world. It is a private-sector, publicly traded company, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, and present in around 30 countries worldwide.
The company is listed on the stock exchanges of São Paulo, New York City, Paris, Hong Kong, and Madrid.
Vale posted net income of US$3.98bn for 2016 after reporting a US$12.1bn net loss a year earlier.
The profit was mostly driven by higher Ebitda, higher gains on foreign exchange and monetary variation, and lower impairment of non-current assets and onerous contracts.
