Description

The Coca Codo Sinclair hydro project involves the construction and operation of a run-of-the-river plant on the Coca river, between the Ecuadoran provinces of Napo and Sucumbio. Being developed by state-owned special-purpose firm Compañía Hidroeléctrica Coca Codo Sinclair (Cocasinclair), the complex will feature 8 generating units equipped with Pelton-type turbines of 187.5MW each. In 2009, Cocasinclair signed a turnkey contract with Chinese constructor Sinohydro for the design, procurement and construction of the facility. Backed by Chinese funds, construction began in 2010. Once in operation, the plant is designed to generate an annual average of 8,731GWh, allowing Ecuador to save in fuel imports and reducing CO2 emissions annually.
