Project Details

The hydro's original components included a 165m-high roller compacted concrete dam to hold 592Mm3 and a reservoir that would cover 15.3km2. Power would be sent to the national grid via a 230kV, 35km transmission line. The El Cimarrón hydro project was put on hold in January 2009 due to the scope and complexity of the work involved, including diverting a river and building a 11km tunnel. The project was later redesigned to resubmit its EIS to the authorities. The new project scope sees Cimarrón as a multipurpose initiative encompassing not only power generation, but also irrigation, potable water and tourism.
