Electric Power / Industry Analysis

The Aftermath of Copenhagen February 2010

The result of the two week United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) has been dubbed as the "lowest common denominator" by Sweden's Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren, who also called it a "great failure", while President Lula of Brazil signaled that he did not consider the meeting a failure. Whether opting for optimism or pessimism, the fact is that the expectation of the summit was perhaps too high, and at least countries, companies, and citizens can change their strategies for further negotiation in Bonn, Germany, in May, and for COP16 in Mexico City in late November.

Energy efficiency in the electric sector January 2010

Energy efficiency (EE) is not a new idea to the region; most programs have been running since the 1990s. Nevertheless, the idea has not yet become an energy source in its own right as it has in some developed countries. But EE has gained acceptance and success in some countries in the region and is now considered a reliable energy "source" that is included in long term energy planning. This report will briefly sketch the electric oriented EE programs in the largest electricity consuming countries in the region and it will discuss the impact they have had on long-term energy planning.
