Latin America telecoms investment in 2010 February 2010

At the start of 2009 there were some announcements of Latin American telcos cutting back slightly on investments in response to the global crisis, although earnings reports indicate that their commercial activity was more or less unaffected, with continuing growth in mobile and broadband services in particular. This makes for an exciting 2010 as operators revive the plans that did not make it in 2009, as well as preparing for legislative changes in certain countries that could give an added incentive, particularly for TV services. Peru: Under Telefónica's grip of steel January 2010

Among Peruvians, Telefónica del Peru has a reputation similar to that of Telmex in Mexico, often the only available option for fixed line services and constantly at loggerheads with government attempts to curb activities that are deemed monopolistic. Consumer rights initiatives against Telefónica used to be a regular feature of the local news, but that changed about two years ago, most likely because mobile telephony has become far more popular. Even so, Telefónica still plays a significant role in the two most dynamic telecoms segments: broadband and mobile.
