Dominican Republic power group Basic Energy is evaluating plans to develop two 150MW coal-fired generators, one in Jamaica and one in Panama, Basic's president and CEO Rolando González Bunster said in a presentation.
The projects would be developed by joint ventures, and the Panama plant would be developed with an unnamed mining company, he said.
The projects would not be the only coal-fired ventures Basic is rolling out in the region.
Basic's Dominican Republic subsidiary EGE Haina has signed an MOU with Seoul-based Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) to build and operate a 240MW, US$500mn coal-fired plant in the Caribbean country.
Construction of that project is due to begin this year and wrap up in 2011.
The company is also converting its 300MW Cespm plant in the Dominican Republic to natural gas. Basic Energy hopes to purchase the natural gas from US power company AES's (NYSE: AES) Andrés LNG regasification terminal.
"This plant... will become one of the three or four most efficient plants in the Dominican system," González said.
González delivered his presentation at the Institute of the Americas' XVII Latin American Energy Conference in La Jolla, California.
