Argentina's Neuquen province energy department Epen received 14 bids on Friday for a tender to provide materials, including cables, for a project to build 400km of transmission lines in the western part of the province, Epen project manager Alejandro Tarifa told BNamericas.

All 14 companies are based in Argentina.

Epen plans to award the contract in about one month, Tarifa said.

Meanwhile, Epen has sold nine sets of bidding rules so far for a separate tender to build the lines. Brazil's Alusa is among the companies that have bought bidding rules, he said.

Bidding rules are still available until 10 days before the reception of bids, which is scheduled for March 3.

The World Bank's International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will fund and oversee the project, which will benefit some 800 families living in the mountainous area. Epen will manage the tenders and the construction of the lines on behalf of the IBRD.

The winding bidder(s) of the construction contracts will start work in June and the lines will start operations by end-2005.

The tender is divided into two parts, with one zone including three lines totaling 142km and the second zone made up of two lines covering 258km.

Interested companies can bid on either or both of the packages.
