Dominican Republic generator EGE Haina restarted operations Friday of its 150MW Sultana del Este diesel-fired power plant after receiving a US$3mn payment Thursday from two power distributors, company spokesperson Marta Fernandez de Marazal told BNamericas.
Haina had only one of its 14 plants in operations on Thursday because, like other Dominican Republic generators, it has been unable to buy fuel because distributors are behind on payments.
The one plant operating was the 46MW Barahona coal-fired plant.
The payments received Thursday were from EDE Norte and EDE Sur, the two distributors that Spain's Unión Fenosa returned to the state last year. Norte and Sur still owe Haina US$36mn, and the country's other distributor, AES EDE Este, owes US$40mn, Fernandez said.
Este, a subsidiary of US power company AES, is scheduled to make an US$11mn payment in the week of April 26, she added.
Haina has a contract with the government to generate 250MW a day but because of payment issues the company has not been able to meet this commitment since March 9, Haina said in a statement. The island's power crisis incurred US$25mn additional costs on Haina in 2003 alone, the statement said.
EGE Haina has 619MW installed capacity.
