A power interconnection under development between Colombia and Panama could begin operations by early 2014, Luis Fernando Alarcón, CEO of Colombian state transmission company ISA, said in a conference call with analysts and investors.
"The interconnection between Colombia and Panama that we are working on jointly with Etesa from Panama is a very interesting project," he said. "This is a key strategic project that will allow the connection of the South American grid with the Central American grid."
ISA and Etesa set up the special purpose company Interconexión Eléctrica Colombia-Panamá for the project which will run 614km, 340km in Colombia and 274km in Panama.
"Right now we are working on feasibility studies for the regulatory, legal, economic and financial implications of the project. We are finalizing the hiring of a financial advisor that will help us in the evaluation of the project," the CEO said.
"We have begun the environmental and social impact studies, and we are in the pre-design stage," he added. "If all goes well, we hope to be able to start construction by the end of next year, and we hope to start operations by the beginning of 2014."
The connection would have initial transmission capacity of 300MW, BNamericas reported previously.
