Six offers were submitted to Colombian state generator Isagen to carry out the principal works for the 820MW, US$1.4bn Sogamoso hydro project, CEO Luis Rico announced Wednesday.

Sogamoso will boast a 190m-high concrete face dam and flood 6,960ha, with annual average output of 5.06TWh - enough to meet half the demand of a city like Bogotá and equivalent to almost 10% of the country's annual consumption.

The bidders are Consorcio Constructor Sogamoso (Constructores e Comercio Camargo Corrêa-Conconcreto); Consorcio Obrascon Huarte Lain-Panedile Argentina-Baytur Construction and Contracting; Consorcio AGCCJIC (Andrade Gutierrez-Construcciones Conciviles-JJC Contratistas Generales); Promesa Sociedad Futura Hidroeléctrica del Norte (Vergel y Castellanos-Hidrochina-China Gezhouba Group); Sinohydro; and Promesa Grupo ICT (Impregilo-Conalvías-Técnica Vial).

The contract entails the dam, spillways and underground works and is due to be awarded by month-end, Rico said in a presentation.

Contracts to provide the electromechanical equipment are also slated to be awarded this year, he added. Companies in the running for these contracts are Power Machines, Impsa, Voith Hydro, Andritz, Mitsui, Toshiba, Alstom, Energomash, Siemens and Imocom.

Commercial operations of the plant in Santander department are scheduled to begin November 30, 2013.

Bonds totaling 850bn pesos (US$432mn) will finance the project's first phase (2009-10), while the second phase (2011-14) aims to secure financing from local banks and the Andean Development Corporation, said the executive.

Second phase funds will also come from companies vying for the supply of the electromechanical equipment and locally issued bonds, Rico said.

In September, Isagen announced it had signed a 178bn-peso contract with Grupo ICT for Sogamoso's diversion tunnels, and tunnels to access the underground machine house.

Other project contractors include Mincivil, Intersa, Universidad Industrial de Santander, Termotécnica Coindustrial, Ingetec Ingeniería y Diseño, Instelec, Consorcio Integral-VQ Ingeniería and Grupo Ingars Colombia.
