Brazilian power companies CEEE, Caiuá and Cemar reported the following results in the first nine months of 2005:

CEEE

Rio Grande do Sul state power company CEEE posted net profits of 53.5mn reais (US$24.3mn) in the first nine months of 2005, reversing a 186mn-real loss in the same period a year earlier.

The company posted revenues of 1.87bn reais in the first nine months of 2005 up from 1.68bn reais in the same period 2004, while operating profits were 58mn reais, turning around a 185mn-real loss in the same period 2004.

Power rate adjustments, lower provisions for labor disputes and the appreciation of the local currency were behind the higher profits in the first three quarters of 2005.

Caiuá

Brazilian private power group Caiuá posted a loss of 54mn reais in the first nine months of 2005 compared with a 138mn-real loss in the same period a year earlier.

Gross operating revenue rose to 3.28bn reais in the nine-month period, up from 2.81bn reais in the same period a year earlier. Operating profits were 168mn reais, which compares with a loss of 100mn reais in the same period in 2004.

Lower financial expenses and power rate increases authorized by power regulator Aneel were behind the improved results, the company said in a statement.

Caiuá is the holding company of the Grupo Rede power group that controls distributors Celtins, Cemat and Celpa in the states of Tocantins, Mato Grosso and Pará respectively as well as other smaller distributors.

Cemar

Private power distribution company Cemar posted net profits of 73mn reais in the first nine months of 2005, reversing a 52mn-real loss in the same period a year earlier.

Gross operating revenues were 616mn reais in the first nine months of 2005, up from 493mn reais in the same year ago period. The company posted operating profits of 76mn reais in the first nine months of 2005, reversing a 53mn-real operating loss in the same period a year earlier.

Lower operating expenses were partly behind the company's higher profits. Cemar distributes power in the northeastern state of Maranhão. Cemar invested 174mn reais in first nine months of 2005, up from 30.5mn reais in the same period a year earlier.
