Ecuadorian state generator Termopichincha is gearing up to begin studies to advance development of the country's geothermal potential, a projects department official told BNamericas.
The work will target the Chachimbiro geothermal field in Imbabura province that boasts an estimated potential of 130-150MW.
The goal is to have a work group in place in about a month that will draft an action plan to advance development of this field, said the official.
The team will build on initial research carried out by electrification institute Inecel - which no longer exists - and coordinate work with the science and technology department Senacyt that is due to complete prefeasibility studies by year-end.
The natural characteristics and conditions of Ecuador's geology in the center-north sierra make geothermal generation an advantageous option for the addition of base energy, according to proponents.
Chachimbiro is one of 17 geothermal zones that have been identified, and one of three principal geothermal projects along with Chalupas (Napo, Cotopaxi provinces) and Tufiño (Carchi).
Although Termopichincha's current output comes from thermo, the company is looking at other sources, including hydro, as part of government efforts to bolster and diversify the energy matrix.
