The 46MW Totoral wind farm under construction in Chile's region IV is preparing to start up operations and could begin generating power in the coming weeks, according to a statement released by Norway's SN Power.
SN Power owns 80% of the Norvind special purpose firm set up to develop the project. Chilean company Centinela controls the remainder.
"We are filled with deep pride in completing a process that has been virtually flawless," project director at SN Power Chile Mario Marchese said in the statement. "We hope to serve as a model for new projects such as this in Chile and other countries where SN Power has operations."
The project, SN Power's first wind farm, will use 23 Vestas turbines and be connected to the country's central SIC grid.
Investment in the project is set to reach US$140mn, according to the statement.
Washington, DC-based IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank, signed an agreement to invest US$61.5mn in the construction of the plant earlier in the year. Totoral will be the country's first ever project-financed wind farm, according to the IFC website.
The wind farm will help to reduce carbon emissions by 65,000t/year, the statement said.
