Ecuador's navy has started dredging work in the docks area of the country's main port of Guayaquil, local press reported.
The operation is designed to ensure a safer and smoother approach for merchant and passenger ships at the port's eight docking piers.
The two dredgers were hired by the port authority (APG) at a cost of US$800,000 to extract 160,000 cu m of sediment over six months to increase uniform depth from 8-9m to 10m.
The APG intends to acquire a bigger dredging machine to implement a permanent maintenance program for the port and access channels through Guayaquil bay once the current stage is concluded.
Guayaquil handles about 70% of Ecuador's cargo shipments, averaging 500 TEUs/d, and generating about US$25mn/y in revenue. Tonnage is forecast to grow 21% this year to 6.2Mt and 500,000 TEUs, increasing to 9Mt and 850,000 TEUs annually in three or four years.
The APG is in the process of seeking investment to develop and modernize the port.
