Local enterprise Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCA) was the only bidder for the concession to rehabilitate Peru's Tren Macho railway, a source from the transport and communication ministry's (MTC) concession coordination department told BNamericas.
The railway - which has continued to run despite its aging and damaged infrastructure connecting cities Huancayo (in Junín department) and Huancavelica - requires an estimated US$16mn-18mn investment. The train covers a distance of 138km at altitudes of up to 3700m in the Sierra mountain range.
FCA's technical proposal is now being analyzed, while its financial proposal is scheduled to be reviewed on April 11. If approved, the enterprise will be awarded the concession on April 12.
The single participant came as a surprise, because it was an international concession where at least more than one bidder was expected, the source told.
Tren Macho will contribute to the local economy by enabling farmers to transport production to markets. The process is being handled by the MTC.
