Peruvian rail concessionaire Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCA) will launch this weekend reconstruction and rehabilitation works on the Huancayo-Huancavelica railway system, known as Tren Macho, local paper Diario Correo quoted FCA president Juan de Dios Olaechea as saying.
The works, slated to take 490 days, will cost US$18.1mn. The investment was financed through a US$15mn loan provided by the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and US$4mn in government counterpart funding.
Authorities will hold on to the excess funds in case unforeseen expenses arise during the project, a source from the transport and communications ministry (MTC) told BNamericas.
Each kilometer of the railway's 97km will cost US$154,000 to rehabilitate; roughly half of the US$350,000/km the state invests repaving highways, such as the Carretera Central expressway.
Tren Macho is considered the best alternative to the Carretera Central highway in terms of connecting the area's surrounding towns. The train will also improve commercial trade and production outside capital Lima.
FCA was awarded the works last month. The company was the sole project bidder.
Tren Macho is expected to benefit more than 175,000 people.
