These ports will become reality through private sector initiatives, said Rentería, adding that the government's role is to promote private investment in these projects.
One of the projects is the construction of a port terminal in Bahía Málaga, near Buenaventura, on the Pacific coast. According to plans, the terminal will have a cargo handling capacity of 12Mt/y.
The second terminal is a deep water port in Tribugá, also on the Pacific coast. The terminal is expected to have a cargo handling capacity of 8.7Mt/y.
The third initiative is the construction of a port terminal in Turbo, on the Atlantic coast. The expected capacity of the terminal is not clear, as studies are still underway.
The estimated investment required for each terminal has yet to be determined, said Rentería.
Transport ministry official Manuel Campos is currently working on the initial structuring of these projects.
