IFE to complete Puerto Cabello-La Encrucijada railway by end-2012

Venezuela's state-controlled rail company, Instituto de Ferrocarriles del Estado (IFE), expects to complete construction of the Puerto Cabello-La Encrucijada rail line in 2H12.

The 108km line will have nine stations and will connect the Carabobo state port with cities Juan Jose Mora, Naguanagua, San Diego, Diego Ibarra, San Joaquin de Carabobo, IFE reported on its website.

Construction of the railway's 15 tunnels is 84% complete. The line will include the Barbula tunnel, which, at 9.5km, will be the longest rail tunnel in Latin America, state news agency AVN reported.

Work also includes building 24 bridges, the tallest of which is 52m high and will link two tunnels in Puerto Cabello.

The railway is expected to transport 14mn passengers and 11Mt of cargo each year.
