Costa Rica's Juan Santamaria international airport received an above average ranking from an International Air Transport Association (IATA) survey, La Republica reported.
The survey measured the opinions of businesses and vacation travellers and also services offered by the airport and its airlines.
Juan Santamaria received the highest ranking in reference to parking facilities, third in terms of prices, fifth in safety and among the top ten for public services.
The airport also ranked above average in flight connections, flight frequency and cleanliness.
IATA is comprised of 36 international airports including Madrid, Brussels, Sydney, Singapore, Genova, Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Dublin, Zurich, Malta and Hong Kong and some 280 airlines. Juan Santamaria is the only airport in Latin America that was included in this evaluation.
The airport is under a 20-year concession with Alterra Partners Costa Rica, who assumed operations in May 2001. According to the contract, Alterra must invest a total of US$212mn in airport modernization and expansion, 60% of which must be invested within the first three years.
Alterra is slated to open new boarding facilities by month-end.
In January, construction company Bechtel-Edica, a member of the Alterra consortium, began work on projects which include runway repairs, BNamericas previously reported.
