Ecuador's civil aviation department (DAC) will build an international air terminal in the town of Santa Rosa in the country's southern El Oro province, El Universo reported.
The terminal will deal with both cargo and passenger traffic, including planes from nearby Peru. It will deflect traffic from Machala airport, some 10km north, which has no space for expansions.
The DAC is currently carrying out technical studies for the Santa Rosa airport, which are expected to take eight months. Once the required investment is calculated, and the concession awarded, construction will take two years.
The DAC is also working on a new air terminal for Isla Baltra in the Galapagos Islands as a means of increasing the islands' tourism capacity, the report added.
