The Mexican ports sector needs to carry out improvements in all areas of the value chain to raise its competitive advantages, director for the transport and communications ministry's (SCT) port tariffs department, Francisco Pastrana, told BNamericas.

"Our ports need to raise their competiveness levels to help raise the country's competitiveness," Pastrana said.
"However, this subject is not limited to physically expanding facilities. Mexican ports have to incorporate the industry's value chain into their business model," he added.
To illustrate this idea, Pastrana referred to the tender call that SCT placed on September 2 to build a vehicle-specialized terminal at Lázaro Cárdenas port in Michoacán state.
"We believe that, in addition to the storage area, this project should include areas to assemble auto parts or apply labels, for example," he stated.
"This involves making improvements in ports logistics and modernizing connectivity to include other means of transport, mainly railroads and highways," the official said.
Other improvements, Pastrana said, include infrastructure upgrades and streamlining tender calls so that port projects can effectively create added value.
